Strings

I love making sculptures of wire and string. It brings pleasure to cover the iron skeleton with warm threads. The cold hardness of the wire opposes to the softness of the hemp and their interaction reaches natural balance and good effect. Creating such a sculpture starts with a simple drawing, line or piece of wire crushed by a joke in my hands. The final result is often surprising because in the course of work the initial design changes. The work is largely intuitive as if the idea was projected in me and the right time has come to realize it. I close my eyes and the image of a silhouette appears. I assemble a shape that seems to have always been complete. When I finish, I often wonder if I have created it.
It sounds like magic but the real image is what inspires me. I don’t depict it, I transform it. I want to catch the passing state of the figure or the object, to express the feelings that they provoke in me. My aim is to re-create the spirit of objects, trees, people... In real life they are of different materials, here they are united by something common – the luminescence of the unusual material.
The thread is a symbol of the link that connects events in life. It is the building element, through which the past gives hope for the future, the present explains the past, and the future is just future - it is forthcoming. The thread goes before and after all of them - endlessly.
The silhouette is composed of threads that wrap around the basic structure and build one on top of the other. Every wind affects the next, such as gained experience, or consequence. Gradually, step by step, as we walk towards the set goal.
Why exactly this material? String has the color of clay - earthy and accessible. It allows me to combine it with various colors and materials, to weave mussels, stones, wood and every thing that occurs to my mind. I use color accents in my work, risking to destroy the integrity of the form. I cannot save the yellow of the sun, the green of the tree leaves ... I want to create an enchanting world where even the sad things are colourful and give hope that good is still coming.
There is a fairy tale in which a young man stretches tread of magic ball in order not to lose his way back. This is my way to go ahead. Destiny is often depicted with distaff and spindle but in its hands thread should not be cut off ... The thread is a symbol of the link that connects the events in life, that connects past, present and future.
