VILLAGE GATE bronze, stone 44/48/17 cm
Entrance and at the same time – exit. Contradictory in its nature, a symbol uniting the beginning and the end. A door which you open for the first time or another one, closed forever. An entrance – leading to a warm home or to a dark room full of ghosts. An exit – to the freedom and the bright life path or to hardships which are difficult to overcome.
A door opened for one, is closed for somebody else. A gate which brings men in different future.
It stands as a huge sign on the face of the house. We can read it and understand about the life behind it. Is the door old or is it new? Is it just four pieces of wood nailed together or has a skillful craftsman put his soul into it day after day? White and wide, small and dark, open or locked with lots of locks and keys? One can feel what awaits them behind: a noisy family with lots of children, lonely old men sitting at poor tables, rich men comfortably placed in luxurious armchairs…
An old gate, hanging on its hinges, has collected the dust of the past years. Its face, cracked and faded, tells stories from the past. It calls you and invites you – please, come, come. You are fascinated. You enter – shy but impatient. Ready to learn more about yourself through the stories of the others, to feel the life that has passed and to give account about yours.
A modern, polished door. There unknown optimistic future is waiting for you. It is open and you can see the light gap. Scared, you go through, not knowing if you will be able to return. If you don’t go in, if you stay where you are, doors close one by one, one after another.
The doors, which inspired me, opened and closed inside my heart. In the various towns and villages, where I found them, they had their style and vision. They provoked my curiosity and free images about what they hide behind. I went through them although some of them were not really open. They took me to their hidden secrets. They took me to a road which I want to share through the images which I have created.
I understood that doors are limits and restrictions if we accept they are.
They could as well be a beginning and an exit if you believe.
